In the 14th Century, the Art of Cloisonné was passed onto the Chinese by western travelers. Perfected by the Chinese, Cloisonné is the art of applying colourful enamels to the surface of a bronze or copper object. The artist’s technique requires several time-consuming steps, starting with molding the base metal into the desired shape. The brass wires are soldered to form a pattern, into which coloured enamels are inlaid, then fired. The enameling and firing process is repeated until a perfectly smooth finish is obtained. The surface is then polished, revealing the brass wires for gold plating. The result is a beautiful piece of Cloisonné.
