Acer saccharum - Sugar Maple is Canada's national tree. It is also one of the most important hardwood trees of northeastern North America. Growing best in deep, fertile, well-drained soils where moisture is plentiful, this beautiful tree reaches heights of 24 to 30m (80-100 ft) and diameters of 60 to 90cm (24-35 in). Sugar Maple is the primary source of Canadian maple syrup and maple sugar. In the fall, the yellow to brilliant orange and scarlet leaves are one of Canada's most beautiful forest scenes.
